Science at a Time of National Emergency

The Barn, Valley Falls, KS

June 12-14, 2002

Participating universities at this year's conference were the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Nebraska and Iowa State University. The keynote speaker was Martin Apple, President and CEO of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents.

Participants discussed a number of ways that scientists can come to the aid of the country, while also noting the difficulties created by increased national security. Among these four Midwestern institutions, a number of complimentary strengths were identified in the areas of food safety and crisis management. The pages of the 2002 white paper show a frank examination of the issues, and reveal several possibilities for joint research on preventing and mitigating bioterrorism.
